Airline Passenger Cracks Joke About Opening Exit Door In Flight, Cops Show Up At O'Hare Gate

(CBS) -- A passenger aboard a Phoenix-to-Chicago flight allegedly made a joke Sunday about opening the cabin's emergency exit door, prompting police to meet the airliner after it landed at O'Hare International Airport.

Chicago police say they were informed around 6 p.m. about a "disturbance" aboard American Airlines Flight 1146. A passenger on the exit row allegedly made a reference and a gesture as if to open the emergency exit door while the plane was in the air, Chicago Police News Affairs said.

Authorities met the plane at a gate and notified the FBI, which ran a background check on the passenger. After interviewing others who had been on the plane, the suspect was released.

A spokesman for American Airlines says the flight landed on time and deferred questions about the incident to police.
