After Sitting Idle For Years, Defibrillator At Suburban Health Club Saves Two Men Weeks Apart

(CBS) -- For years, a potential lifesaving device sat waiting and then it was put to use twice in just weeks.

In this Original Report, CBS 2's Brad Edwards meets both men whose lives were saved.

In Lemont, at the park district's CORE center, a defibrillator sat unused at its station for six years until Al Carbaugh collapsed in October.

"I've seen one percent of the people that had what you had survive," Carbaugh said.

Eight weeks later on December 5, Tom Lane, a spitting image of health, hit the floor.

"I actually was fortunate enough to fall at the feet of a 25-year-old EMT in training," he said.

In both cases, the men are grateful for immediate response.

"I just cannot believe how fortunate I was and sometimes that chokes me up a little bit," Lane said.

"Every time I think about it I get that much more grateful," Carbaugh said.
