Activists Rally Against BP Whiting Practices
EAST CHICAGO, Ind. (CBS) -- A rally was held in the former company town of Marktown Park in East Chicago, over the weekend to call attention to what activists say are environmentally unsound practices used by BP in Whiting.
WBBM's Kimberly Easton reports, activists say the BP facility is the largest tar sands refinery in the United States.
Marchers in Chicago, Indiana and Michigan were observing National Day of Action against dirty fuels, to get President Obama to reject a Keystone XL pipeline and other "dirty fuel" projects that opponents believe threaten the health and well-being of residents and further destabilize our climate.
The rally occurred within a mile of the BP Whiting Refinery, which recently spilled crude oil into Lake Michigan.
The Sierra Club's Tony Fuller said his group wants a full investigation into the cause of that spill.
