88-Year-Old Man Found Dead In Joliet House Fire

CHICAGO (CBS) -- An 88-year-old man was found dead after a house fire Monday afternoon in southwest suburban Joliet.

Benville Jones was in the home in the 200 block of South Ottawa Street with a caregiver when the fire began at 12:26 p.m., according to Joliet police and the Will County coroner's office.

Jones was trying to refill a lighter when a spark ignited a flame in his immediate area, police said. The caregiver tried to extinguish the flames, which spread quickly.

The caregiver was able to escape, police said. When officers arrived at the scene, they attempted to enter the home but the smoke was too thick.

The Joliet Fire Department extinguished the blaze and Jones was found inside, according to police and the coroner's office. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
