8 Rescued From Extra-Alarm Blaze In Norridge.

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Eight people were rescued from an extra-alarm fire in northwest suburban Norridge on Wednesday, after they became trapped by flames that destroyed their home.

The fire started around 5 a.m. in a single-family home in the 7900 block of West Gunnison Street.

Norridge Police Chief Jim Jobe said a couple police officers helped rescue eight people from the home, in part by using a ladder they found nearby.

"One officer had to break a window to get somebody out from the second story," he said. "They put a ladder up to the second story to help a kid out of the second floor."

All eight people were taken to hospitals after they were rescued, but none of the injuries was considered life-threatening. Two police officers were injured when they slipped and fell on ice at the scene. They also were taken to hospitals for treatment of minor injuries.

Firefighters had water pressure issues due to partially frozen water mains at the scene. It took nearly half an hour for crews to begin pouring water on the flames. By then, firefighters were forced to take a defensive stance, and battle the heavy flames from a distance.

Crews from 14 surrounding communities assisted in extinguishing the blaze.

The home was a total loss.
