Fatally Shot Chicago Teen Was 'In Wrong Place At The Wrong Time,' His Mother Says

(CBS) – A Chicago teen has become one of the city's latest grim statistics.

CBS 2's Mike Puccinelli has the story of one boy who lost his life just blocks from his home in Calumet Heights.

"He was in the wrong place at the wrong time," Ericka Wright says of her son, Fabian Lavinder.

The 15-year-old Bowen High School freshman was fatally shot Monday night.

Fabian was a passenger in a car last night near 89th and Exchange when someone in another vehicle pulled up and opened fire, hitting Fabian in the chest, police said.

Wright addressed her son's killers directly: "I don't understand how you could take somebody's life. Do you see me, what you're doing to me?"

She had to identify her son's body at the morgue. Yet the grieving mom says she can forgive.

"I don't have hate in my heart. But my heart is hurting so bad right now," she says.

No suspects were in custody. Suspects were last seen driving away in a white sedan, police said.
