7-Year-Old Shot On Christmas Day At Family Gathering In Brighton Park

CHICAGO (CBS) - A 7-year-old girl is in critical condition after she was shot early Christmas morning.

Emergency crews responded to the 3500 block of South Washtenaw in Brighton Park just before 2 a.m.

The girl had sustained gunshot wounds to the abdomen.

Chicago police said the girl was inside a home, watching TV in the living room, at a family gathering when an offender fired shots from the sidewalk into the house.

She was transported to Stroger hospital for treatment.

Officials said the girl is not from the area, but was visiting family.

Police also said a second victim, a 38-year-old man, was shot in connection with this incident and walked into St. Anthony Hospital for treatment. He suffered a gunshot wound to the leg and will be transferred to Mt. Sinai.

His condition was stabilized.

Area Central detectives are investigating and no one is in custody at this time. Police said they have identified the intended target as a 38-year-old who was shot in this incident.

Ald. George Cardenas said the man had gang ties but it is not clear what that man was doing in the area.

"We need to ask questions," Cardenas said.

He said the 7-year-old is expected to survive.

In a statement, the family of the 7-year-old girl said they are "grateful for the outpouring of love and support."

This is a developing story.
