7 People Wounded In Gary Shooting

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Seven people were wounded in a shooting early Sunday in northwest Indiana.

Officers responded to at 2:33 a.m. to a shooting in the 4600 block of Melton Road (U.S. 12/20)in Gary, according to Gary Police Lt. Dawn Westerfield.

Those shot included four men—ages 28, 26, 22 and 22; and three women—ages 28, 24 and 20, Westerfield said. The 26-year-old man was in critical condition as of Monday afternoon, and the other six victims' had been stabilized.

An eighth person, a male of unknown age, suffered a leg injury while trying to get to safety.

Westerfield said the shooting appears to be an isolated incident that began with an altercation inside a business, and later erupted outside.

No shots were fired inside the business, where police have responded 14 times over the past two years, Westerfield said. Most of the incidents were "routine nonviolent events," she said.

A person of interest has been identified and is cooperating with detectives, Westerfield said. Additional persons of interest are being identified.
