5 Killed, 28 Wounded In Weekend Shootings Across Chicago

CHICAGO (STMW) -- Five people were killed and at least 28 others — including a 5-year-old girl — were wounded in shootings across Chicago since Friday evening.

The most recent homicides happened early Sunday in the Brainerd neighborhood on the South Side.

Officers responding at 1:13 a.m. to a call of shots fired in the 9000 block of South Marshfield found two men unresponsive, according to Chicago Police.

One man was shot in the head and the other suffered a gunshot wound to the neck, police said. They were both pronounced dead at the scene.

Neighbors whose homes were surrounded by crime scene tape stood on porches and in their front yards as detectives investigated. The men, one covered by a white sheet and the other covered by a blue sheet, could be seen lying on a bungalow's porch among at least 12 evidence markers.

Dontell Petty, 37, was one of more than a dozen people gathered in the street outside the tape.

He identified one of the men as his 42-year-old cousin Antwon Brooks, a graduate of Calumet High School who had a son and daughter, both in their 20s, and four grandchildren.

"He was a good, caring daddy," Petty said, adding that the other man was known as "Shoeshine."

About 10:20 p.m. Saturday, a 17-year-old boy was killed and a man was wounded in a shooting in the South Side Back of the Yards neighborhood, police said.

The boy and 19-year-old man were standing in the street about 10:20 p.m. in the 5200 block of South Sangamon when a silver Audi pulled up and someone inside fired shots, police said.

The 17-year-old was shot in the back and taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said. The man was shot in the left arm and was also taken to Stroger, where his condition was stabilized. The Cook County medical examiner's office could not immediately confirm the fatality.

About 9:35 p.m. Friday, a 27-year-old man was shot to death in the South Chicago neighborhood.

Jeremy H. Ray was outside in the 8900 block of South Brandon about 9:35 p.m. when two gunmen got out of a car, walked up and opened fire, striking him repeatedly, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner's office. The shooters then drove off.

Ray, who lived in the 4200 block of West 112th Place, was taken to Advocate Trinity Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:27 p.m., authorities said.

Less than an hour earlier, one man was killed and another wounded in an Englewood neighborhood shooting on the South Side.

Terry Bates Jr., 26, and a 27-year-old man were outside in the 200 block of West Garfield about 8:45 p.m. when two gunmen walked up to them and opened fire before running away, authorities said.

They were both shot multiple times and taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where Bates was pronounced dead at 10:35 p.m. He lived in the 500 block of West Oak Street.

The older man suffered chest and leg wounds, and his condition was stabilized, police said.

A 5-year-old girl was wounded in the weekend's first shooting, which happened about 8 p.m. Friday in the Marquette Park neighborhood on the Southwest Side.

She was on a sidewalk with a 34-year-old woman in the 6700 block of South Artesian when someone walked out of an alley and opened fire, striking the girl in the foot and the woman in the left ankle, police said.

The woman drove them to St. Bernard Hospital, where the woman's condition was stabilized. The girl was transferred to Holy Cross Hospital in good condition, police said. It was unclear if they were the targets of the shooting.

The most recent nonfatal shooting happened early Sunday in the East Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side. A man and a woman, both 30 years old, were standing outside about 4:10 a.m. in the 2700 block of West Wilcox when a red SUV pulled up and someone inside opened fire, police said. The woman was shot in the chest and the man was shot in the buttocks. They later showed up at Mount Sinai Hospital, where both of their conditions were stabilized.

About 3 a.m., a 25-year-old man was shot multiple times in a backyard in the West Side Austin neighborhood's 100 block of North Laporte, police said. He was taken in serious condition to Mount Sinai Hospital.

Earlier Sunday, a 16-year-old boy and a man were shot in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood on the Southwest Side. The boy was shot in the buttocks and the 20-year-old was shot in the left leg about 1:55 a.m. in the 6300 block of South Artesian, police said. They were both taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where their conditions were stabilized.

About 1:45 a.m., an 18-year-old man was shot in the South Lawndale neighborhood on the Southwest Side. He was sitting on the hood of a car in the 2300 block of South Sacramento when a male came out of a gangway shouting gang slogans before opening fire, police said. The man suffered a gunshot wound to the upper body, but his hospital information was not immediately available, police said.

At least 18 more people have been wounded in shootings across Chicago since 8 p.m. Friday.
