3 Rescued After Boat Capsizes Near Monroe Harbor

CHICAGO (STMW) -- Three men were rescued from Lake Michigan after their sailboat capsized near Monroe Harbor on Tuesday night.

Shortly before 8 p.m., the three men — two 63-year-olds and a 50-year-old — were aboard a 19-foot sailboat bound for the harbor, according to Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford.

As the boat neared Monroe Harbor, at 400 E. Monroe St., a 46 mph gust capsized the boat and the men fell in the lake, Langford said.

Chicago Fire Department crews were already on the lake, anticipating that a lot of boats would be returning to the harbor to beat the incoming storm clouds over Lake Michigan, Langford said.

"They moved in right away and scooped them up," Langford said.

All three men were wearing life preservers and all refused hospitalization, Langford said.
