7-year-old boy among three people shot in Englewood

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Bullets riddled the street Monday evening after three people were shot in a vehicle in Englewood – including a 7-year-old boy.

CBS 2's Marybel González caught up with the family of the woman and child who were shot. The family members were visiting their loved ones at the University of Chicago Medical Center.

They were shaken up, but they were also grateful that both the woman and the child were expected to recover after multiple shots struck the car they were in at the time.

The family showed us these pictures of the mother, Donesha, and her 7-year-old son – who is known as Baby Jay.

Baby Jay's aunt, Shkunna Stewart, said the boy was excited about attending his first day of school – and now he is recovering at the University of Chicago's Comer Children's Hospital after being shot in the left arm.

The boy, his 23-year-old mother, and a 19-year-old man were traveling in a vehicle headed west on 74th Street near Loomis Boulevard around 5:45 p.m., when an unknown vehicle pulled up and someone inside shot them all, according to Chicago Police.

At the scene, windows were shattered and nearly two dozen police evidence markers were spotted where shell casings fell.

Donesha's sister said they do not know if this was a targeted shooting or a road rage incident. The family also does not know who could have been behind it.

"We have no idea. We've never been involved in nothing like this, so like I said, we're just in shock about the whole situation," Stewart said. "She told me they were just riding in the car and someone pulled up on the side."

Donesha's family said the 19-year-old man in the car was not related to Baby Jay.

He was shot in the left leg, while Donesha was shot in the left hand.

Donesha and the 19-year-old were both taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center. All the victims were reported in good condition.

Area One detectives are investigating the shooting.
