Husband And Wife Killed, Woman Wounded In Woodridge "Domestic" Shooting

CHICAGO (CBS) -- An estranged husband and wife were killed, and a third person was critically wounded, in a shooting during an apparent domestic dispute in west suburban Woodridge.

Neighbors said children in the home might have seen and heard everything.

Investigators confirmed three people were shot at the Hawthorn Ridge apartment complex in the 7700 block of Fox Street shortly before midnight.

"The lady that I saw they brought out is a sweet girl, a good girl. All I know, she goes to work, and minds her own business. I am sorry this happened to her," neighbor Kerchennia Huff said.

Authorities have not released the victims' names or ages. Woodridge Police Chief Brian Cunningham stressed the public is not at risk, calling the shooting a domestic incident.

Police said the two people killed in the shooting were an estranged husband and wife. Another woman was critically wounded in the shooting.

One woman said she called 911 when she heard a man yelling and kicking at her neighbor's door.

"As I was on the phone with the police, that's when I started hearing the shooting, and all of the screaming," said the woman, who asked to be identified only as Carissa.

Other witnesses recalled hearing at least six shots. They ran outside, and saw a flurry of police activity, with children in the middle of it.

"They were in shock. One little boy had blood on his legs, and on his arms, and I couldn't console him. He was unconsolable. He was just crying, and he was freaked out," Carissa said.

Ricardo Parra said, for the most part, the apartment complex is a tight-knit community.

"There is people here who is living here for more than 20 years. I am surprised this is happening," he said.

Investigators sifted through evidence well into the daylight hours, as the community wondered what could have gone wrong.

"They moved to this area, because they were trying to get away from something. They had some type of issues or something like that in the city, or something like that, that they were coming, and they wanted to come out here to this area to get a new start," Kenneth Griffin said.

At least one of the victims reportedly worked as a school bus driver. That bus company had no comment on the shooting, but her neighbors did.

"You don't see her with nobody, talking to nobody. That's why when I found out with her I was totally just surprised," Ramon Jones said.

Police said the woman who died had moved to the apartment a few days ago, after a domestic dispute with her husband.

A forensic investigation continued Tuesday morning, and police said they were withholding the victims' names until it is completed.
