2 Illinois Post Office Namings To Honor Officer, Congressman

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Post offices in Illinois will be named to honor a late former congressman and Chicago police officer killed in the line of duty.

U.S. Sens. Dick Durbin and Mark Kirk said Monday that the U.S. Senate passed legislation approving the namings. The senators introduced the legislation earlier this year.

One post office in Evanston will be named for Abner Mikva, who died in July at age 90. Mikva served as a Democratic congressman from Illinois for five terms, a federal judge and lawyer to President Bill Clinton.

Another post office on Chicago's Northwest Side will be named for late Chicago police officer Joseph P. Cali, who was killed in 1975 while writing a parking ticket on the city's West Side. He also was a Vietnam veteran.
