2 dead in Lake County wrong-way crash

GURNEE, Ill. (CBS) -- Police were investigating Tuesday after people were killed in a wrong-way head-on crash on Route 41 near Gurnee.

At 4:05 a.m. Monday, Lake County Sheriff's deputies were sent to northbound Route 41 about half a mile north of Stearns School Road in unincorporated Gurnee for the head-on crash.

They learned 32-year-old Ronnie Goggans Jr. of Grayslake man was driving a Nissan Altima south in the northbound lanes of Route 41 at a high speed, when he slammed into a northbound Ford Edge driven by a Ricky Smallwood, 54, of Antioch.

Goggans died at the scene, while Smallwood died at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville. An autopsy by the Lake County Coroner's office determined that both men died of blunt force injuries in the crash.

The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff's Office Technical Crash Investigation Team.
