2 children killed in fire in Carpentersville, Illinois

Two children and two dogs died Sunday morning in a fire in Carpentersville, Illinois, northwest of Chicago.

The call for the fire came in around 9:30 a.m. The Carpentersville Fire Department said they arrived at the burning house in the 1700 block of Kingston Circle to find six people inside.

Two children died in the fire, according to the fire department. Two other people were taken to the hospital, and two others refused treatment at the scene, the fire department said.

There were also animals inside the house, and two dogs were found dead, the fire department said.

Village President John Skillman posted on social media saying a third child, at last check, was in critical condition, fighting for his life overnight. He released the following statement:

"The Village of Carpentersville is grieving today after a devastating house fire took the lives of two young children and left another in critical condition. This is an unimaginable tragedy for the family and for all of us who call this community home."

Stillman said the village will share ways the community can support the victims.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.

This is a developing story. CBS News Chicago will continue to provide updates.
