18 Displaced By Fire In Heart Of Chicago

(CBS) -- Eighteen people were displaced by a fire Wednesday in the Heart of Chicago neighborhood on the South Side.

The three-alarm fire was reported Wednesday afternoon in the 2000 block of West 21st Place, according to the Chicago Fire Department.

The fire was reported to be under control about 5:40 p.m.

The summer heat made fighting the fire more difficult, CBS 2 Audrina Bigos reports.

Additional crews were brought in to provide relief. Personnel work in 10 or 15 minute rotations and are examined by paramedics.

"The fire is pretty hot to start with and with this heat, the human body can't work that long," said Chief Michael Fox. "With the extreme heat, we rotate our guys in and out a lot more so they can take a rest and get some water."
