15-Year-Old Boy Fatally Shot During Attempted Robbery On South Side

(CBS) -- A 15-year-old boy was fatally shot in the chest during an attempted robbery Saturday afternoon on the South Side, according to Police News Affairs.

The shooting happened at around 12:40 p.m. near State and 63rd Street and the victim died at the scene.

Family identified the victim as Demario Bailey. Demario was walking with his brother to basketball practice when they were confronted by a group of four people.

They went for the teen's jacket and then one of them pulled out a gun and shot Demario in the chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:47 p.m., authorities said.

Police questioned two persons of interest in the shooting and both have been released.

Demario was in the tenth grade at Johnson College Prep, according to the school.

"Demario did not deserve to die three days from his sixteenth birthday. Johnson College Prep is working to create a link where people who would like to join us in alleviating this untimely financial burden for the family. Support services for our scholars and team members will be available at school tomorrow," Johnson College Prep Principal Dr. Garland Thomas-McDavid said in a statement.
