$11,000 Reward Offered In Shooting Of AT&T Worker In Berwyn

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Hoping to find the person who shot an AT&T worker after a robbery in west suburban Berwyn last week, the company and a community activist have announced $11,000 in combined reward money for information leading to an arrest.

An AT&T worker was tending to routine maintenance on electrical boxes on Nov. 28, when he was approached by a man with a gun at Highland and Park avenues in Berwyn. The gunman demanded the worker's wallet, and he handed it over, but when the victim turned around to run away, the robber shot him in the back.

"It's very cowardly of the offender," Acting Berwyn Police Chief Michael Cimaglia said.

Berwyn police said they need all the help they can get to find the shooter.

"We have a lot of witnesses that came forward, and we still have a lot of follow-ups to do, videos to watch," Berwyn Police Detective Thomas Tate said.

AT&T announced a $10,000 reward in the case Wednesday morning.

"When I say we're family, we're a family, and it's the right thing to do, and if it helps in the opportunity to bring those responsible to justice, then it's really what we should be doing," said AT&T vice president Jim Maurer.

Community activist Andrew Holmes announced a $1,000 reward last week.

Berwyn police said they are hoping surveillance camera footage will help them crack the case.

"I don't want to tip our hand with what we have right now. There were some cameras that were functioning in the area. The film on those cameras is still in the process of being reviewed," Cimaglia said.

The victim, described as a husband and father in his 40s, was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood in critical condition after the shooting, but his condition has since stabilized.

Anyone with information on the shooting should call Tate at 708-795-2164.
