12-Year-Old Boy Killed In Whiting Hit-And-Run

(CBS) –- Police in northwest Indiana are questioning a trucker in the hit-and-run death of an 12-year-old boy.

Whiting Police called in Indiana State Police to take charge of the case shortly after 12-year-old Angel Villafuerte was struck and killed Wednesday as he tried to cross Indianapolis Boulevard in Whiting, just south of 119th Street.

A witness told police that the truck kept going northbound, and provided a description. Within minutes, a semi and driver matching the description were curbed on Calumet Avenue in Hammond.

Whiting Fire Department paramedics were on the scene quickly, but WBBM was told there was nothing they could do for the boy, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Angel Villafuerte's heartbroken mother says his big brother was with him at the time of the accident.

"He was going to cross the street but his brother held him back because there was a truck coming really fast," said Araceli Villafuerte.

Melissa Milller was washing dishes in her second floor apartment when it happened.

"When I first walked out his brother who was obviously walking across the street with him had to be held down right there," said Milller.

Area residents still shaken.

"It's just shocking to think that somebody would hit a little kid and just take off," said Cody Brusko.
Police are reviewing surveillance video of the area and state police detectives are questioning the trucker and others. Evidence technicians are examining the truck.

So far, no arrests have been made or charges pressed.
