11 Displaced, Firefighter Injured In Grand Crossing House Fire

CHICAGO (STMW) -- A firefighter was injured and 11 people, including five children, were displaced in a house fire early Wednesday in the Grand Crossing neighborhood on the South Side.

Firefighters responded to the blaze about 3:30 a.m. at the 1 – 1/2-story, single-family home in the 7800 block of South Kimbark Avenue, according to Chicago Fire Department Cmdr. Walter Schroeder.

One firefighter suffered minor injuries battling the blaze and was taken to Advocate Trinity Hospital, Schroeder said.

Six adults and five children were displaced when the home was rendered uninhabitable, Schroeder said. The American Red Cross was called to the scene to assist with housing.

Schroeder said the fire was extinguished within 30 minutes. The cause remains under investigation.
