104-Year-Old Lake Villa School Marks Final Day Of Class

(CBS) -- Monday marked the last day for 104-year-old Pleviak Elementary School in Lake Villa.

WBBM's Kimberly Easton reports Pleviak Elementary students played taps, folded their American flag and created a time capsule in memory or a school that has served them so well.

"All of us parents were totally upset and crying but the kids were oblivious to it. It was a fun day," said parent Wendy Blackwell.

Superintendent John Van Pelt says the Lake Villa School District 41 shut down the 104-year-old school because of declining enrollment and revenues.

Principal Scott Klene says students will be dispersed to Thompson and Hooper Elementary schools in the fall. The closing will save the school district nearly $1.2 million.

Pleviak was built in 1910 and is the oldest school building in the district.
