103-Year-Old Veteran Takes Honor Flight Thursday
(CBS) -- A 103-year-old La Grange Park man leaves Thursday morning for his first-ever trip to Washington, D.C., joining other World War II veterans on an Honor Flight.
Joseph Slavik will fly to Washington, courtesy of VNC Honor Flight of Northern and Western Illinois.
"I thought I'd rather go by bus but they said they're going to fly, so let them have their way," Slavik said.
Slavik fought in the Battle of the Bulge.
"I was right in the center of it. And my building was saved. When those shells came at me - they went like this - mine didn't get hit. I saw it with my own eyes. So praying does help."
Slavik - did we mention he's 103? - is going to Washington with his daughter Maribeth, who is his caregiver. He lives with his family, including his granddaughter Maribeth.
"How did you get so old, Grandpa?" his granddaughter asks.
"I don't drink and I don't smoke. And I was too old for sex. So that's what helped me," he joked.
