100-Year-Old Church In Bronzeville Breaks Ground On New Sanctuary, Community Center

(CBS) -- A 100-year-old church is expanding in Chicago's Bronzeville neighborhood.

The groundbreaking for the new sanctuary and community center brought out Apostolic Faith Church members as well as dignitaries including Illinois U.S. Senator Dick Durbin.

"This church is not giving up on this community," Durbin said. "They are investing and they are saying this is our future. We need to have that kind of investment, people who believe and want to strengthen communities, families. That's why it's important to be here today."

When the project is completed it's expected to be able to house more than 3,000 attendees.

The project is slated for completion in 2017.
