1 man killed, 3 wounded in mass shooting in Chicago's River North district

Witnesses recount mass shooting in River North that left 1 dead, 3 hurt

Chicago police on Sunday morning were investigating a deadly mass shooting in the city's River North district.

The shooting happened at 2:35 a.m. in the 400 block of North LaSalle Drive, near Hubbard Street.

Police said the victims were getting into a car when four unidentified suspects approached them on foot, pulled out guns, and opened fire.

A 34-year-old man suffered multiple gunshot wounds to his body and was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he died.

A 36-year-old man was shot in the chest, a 43-year-old man was shot in the back, and a 35-year-old man suffered multiple gunshot wounds throughout his body. All were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition.

Police said the armed suspects then got into a car and drove away from the scene. For most of the morning, police focused on a green Lamborghini, which was surrounded by evidence markers.

"There was a little pause, and then there was like a ton more, and I was like 'Oh gosh,' that's not sounding great," one person said.

Witnesses who live in apartments and condominiums overlooking the scene said they were woken by the gunshots.

"There were a lot of cop cars, we saw people on stretchers," said Elias Ylonen.

Ylonen and Katarina Kerner were visiting from Europe and staying with a relative inside a condo nearby.

"This is something that would be a national headline if it happened in Finland," Ylonen said.

They were shocked to see the slew of lights all along LaSalle.

Chicago police say the four men who fired the shots got back in a car and have not been arrested. No word on what kind of car they were driving, which does not sit well with Kerner.

"It was really scary, and I was kind of concerned for my sister's safety living so close by," she said.

"It definitely makes me not want to live so close to all that, but I also feel like it happens everywhere in Chicago. There is not really anywhere safe from it," said Mary Kate Meyer.

Data from Mayor Johnson's office this year show there have been 41 shootings on the Near North Side — up from 26 last year, but around the same number as 2023.

There are many security cameras all around, but there is no description yet of the car the shooters were in, what they look like, or what they were wearing.

Cook County Crime Stoppers announced Sunday that it is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the ass shooting.

"This was a brazen and violent act that took one life and left three others fighting for their lives," Paul Rutherford, executive director of Cook County Crime Stoppers, said in a news release. "Someone knows who is responsible. Your information, no matter how small it may seem, could be the key to bringing justice to the victims and their families. We want the public to know that you can provide information anonymously and be eligible for a significant cash reward by calling 1-800-535-STOP or going online at www.CPDTIP.com."
