Yawkey Way Commuter Station Opens In Fenway

BOSTON (CBS) --- The Yawkey Way Commuter Rail Station is officially open in Fenway.

"This brand new Yawkey station will provide more convenience safer and comfortable access to thousands of people living and working in this neighborhood and beyond," Gov. Deval Patrick said.

Patrick says a second track allows for several more round-trip rides on the Framingham-Worcester line.

"We are proud to announce that we have increased trips to Boston and Worcester to 40 a day," Patrick said.

The new station is wheelchair accessible and runs on solar power.

Patrick believes the increased service will help alleviate traffic on the Mass. Pike.

Just 500-feet from Fenway Park, Sox President Larry Lucchino says it will help the neighborhood as a whole.

"This project will do tremendous things for decongesting the streets around Fenway Park, for improving parking for Fenway Park and for the entire Fenway neighborhood," he said.

The announcement came the same day, the Callahan Tunnel reopened after a massive remodel.

"Customers will see a smooth road and new pavement which hasn't been done In almost 50 years. Great news." said Richard Davey, MassDOT Transportation Secretary.

Nearly 30,000 people use the tunnel everyday.
