Wrong-Way Driver Sideswipes Car On 495, Charged With OUI

CARVER (CBS) -- Police say a wrong-way driver sideswiped another car on Route 495 in Carver Friday night before he was pulled over and charged with drunken driving.

The Ford Fusion traveling south on the northbound side of the highway was reported to police at 9:46 p.m., authorities said. Police said it then sideswiped a Toyota Corolla with two children and an adult inside, but no injuries were reported in the crash.

James Burgess, 39, of Plymouth, allegedly continued to drive the wrong way into Wareham on to Route 25, and made a U-turn when a Massachusetts State Police cruiser with blue lights on approached. He then pulled over near exit 1 and was arrested.

Burgess is charged with operating under the influence of alcohol, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, leaving the scene of a property damage accident, open container of alcohol, wrong-way operation and illegal U-turn.
