Mental Health Evaluation Ordered For Man Charged With Assaulting Toddler

WORCESTER (CBS) – A man accused of assaulting his 3-year-old nephew multiple times inside a Worcester apartment was ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation.

Taj McDonald, 21, was arrested Thursday and charged with two counts of attempted murder, reckless endangerment of a child and indecent assault and battery on a child.

He appeared in court on Friday and a not-guilty plea was entered on his behalf.

Prosecutors and McDonald's defense attorney agreed that he needed to be evaluated prior to his arraignment.

On Thursday afternoon, McDonald called police and said he had killed his nephew. The boy was found alive inside the Lincoln Village apartments, but suffering from injuries to his face and neck.

The boy was rushed to the hospital and is expected to survive.

McDonald will be held pending a dangerousness hearing on October 19.
