Worcester City Manager: No Public Funds For PawSox Stadium
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The city manager of Worcester, Massachusetts, says the community has no intention of using public money to finance a stadium for the Pawtucket Red Sox.
Worcester City Manager Edward Augustus said in a statement to The Associated Press on Thursday that he would be open to discussions with the Triple-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox if there are options that make use of existing facilities.
The team's ownership group has said if they don't get the land they want for a ballpark in Providence and a deal with Rhode Island, they'll look to move elsewhere.
The team's original proposal, asking for $120 million in state subsidies, was rejected by lawmakers.
New Bedford's mayor has said that potential costs to the city and taxpayers make the stadium proposal "a non-starter."
