Hundreds Of Cars Towed After Worcester Issues Last-Minute Parking Ban

WORCESTER (CBS) – City officials say they will not only waive the parking tickets issued, but also cover the towing expenses hundreds of residents incurred after an overnight parking ban.

The city issued the parking ban at 11:30 p.m. Sunday night, but didn't post the ban on social media or send out an alert until 1:00 a.m. Monday.

As a result, 739 tickets were issued, and more than half of those ticketed were towed.

"Usually, the parking ban will be set a little earlier in the day so we have the opportunity to move our cars before nightfall comes. And we didn't get that chance," said Michael Mahoney, who had three cars towed.

Mahoney's family received three $50 parking tickets and had to pay $396 in towing fees.

City officials admitted their error, and on Tuesday agreed to waive the tickets and work with residents to reimburse the fees.
