Grandmother, Child Struck By SUV Outside St. Vincent Hospital In Worcester
WORCESTER (CBS) — A 54-year-old woman and her five-year-old granddaughter are in critical condition after they were struck by an SUV in Worcester Wednesday afternoon.
The victims were struck while standing on the sidewalk at a bus stop on Major Taylor Boulevard around 1:30 p.m. They have not yet been identified.
Police said the driver, a 33-year-old woman, was involved in a domestic dispute that started on Main Street in Worcester with a 42-year-old man. She then followed the man, who took off in a pickup truck, in her green Ford Explorer.
According to police, she struck the rear of the pickup truck, then lost control, veered off the road, and struck the woman and child as they stood at the bus stop right outside St. Vincent Hospital.
By the time the SUV plowed through a fence and came to a stop, passersby were scrambling to help the critically injured pair. Dunkin Donuts worker, Teo Rivera, was one of the first to help.
"I never seen a situation like that with a little girl. She got the head wide, almost wide spread open. All blood coming down," Rivera said.
Rivera scooped up the girl and ran her to the emergency room.
"Just grabbed her and started running to the ER. And I was on the way like, everything's going to be good, you going to be good. But she didn't say nothing and then all the sudden she started crying. So, that's like when I kind of get relieved that she's OK," Rivera said.
The female driver of the SUV was also taken to St. Vincent to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries. She faces several charges including domestic assault and battery, two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and reckless operation of a motor vehicle. Her name has not been released due to domestic violence laws.
