Winchester Man Facing Arraignment In Mom's Death

WOBURN (AP) — Prosecutors say a Boston-area man is facing arraignment on a murder charge in the beating death of his mother in Winchester earlier this month.

The Middlesex district attorney's office says 46-year-old Matthew McAveeney is scheduled to appear in Woburn District Court on Wednesday morning.

He is accused of killing 70-year-old Barbara McAveeney, whose body was found Oct. 14 in her condominium in the suburb northwest of Boston.

Matthew McAveeney was arrested a week ago in a store parking lot in Belmont, North Carolina, where he had fled.

Prosecutors upgraded the charge against him in an arrest warrant issued Oct. 20. He had previously faced charges including armed assault with intent to murder.

The medical examiner determined the cause of Barbara McAveeney's death was blunt force trauma to the head.
