Wilmington Volunteers Help Build Sean Collier Memorial Playground

BOSTON (CBS) – Volunteers were busy this week in Wilmington, working to build a playground in memory of slain MIT Police Officer Sean Collier.

Collier, who was shot and killed by the Boston Marathon bombers in 2013 during the manhunt for the suspects, graduated from Wilmington High School.

The Sean Collier Memorial Playground is being built at Silver Lake by volunteers and members of the Where Angels Play Foundation.

Firefighters and police officers were among the volunteers building the structure on Tuesday and Wednesday.

According to Wilmington Apple, the playground will be completed by Thursday or Friday.

A "Salute to Sean Collier" fundraiser is scheduled for Friday night in Tewksbury and the playground's grand opening is slated for Saturday at 10 a.m.

The Where Angels Play Foundation was created in the aftermath of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings in Newtown, Conn.

A permanent memorial was also built to remember Collier at MIT earlier this year.
