When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors

Good Monday morning everyone! I hope you had a wonderful holiday weekend despite the soggy start on Friday as Arthur made his way past New England.  Now, our focus turns to the heat, humidity and threat for thunderstorms the next several days.

A slow moving cold front will approach the region and eventually cross southern New England on Thursday.  Ahead of it, high temperatures will be either side of 90 through Wednesday with muggy conditions in place.

No day looks like a washout by any means, but there will be a risk of thunder as this typical summertime pattern sets up.  Today, the greatest chance of storms doesn't arrive until this evening, so you're fine for any outdoor plans through the afternoon.  After that, we'll be tracking scattered thunderstorms coming out of eastern NY, which should weaken as they move eastward during the 6-10 pm timeframe.

Both tomorrow and Wednesday, the afternoon hours will feature the highest threat for storms, especially north and west of Boston.  Here are snapshots of the forecasted precipitation at 3 PM on Tuesday and Wednesday.  Keep in mind, the placement of the storms may not be exact…it's the general theme of pop-up storms that I want you to take away from this.

Some storms could certainly become feisty the next few days with the heat and humidity in place.  While I'm not expecting a widespread severe weather outbreak, I wouldn't be surprised to see some cells reach severe thresholds through midweek.

The best course of action? Have a backup plan to seek shelter should a storm head your way. Keep an eye to the sky and remember, "when thunder roars, go indoors!"  If you have an iPhone or iPad, I'd also recommend downloading our new CBS Boston Weather app, which features live AND future radar customizable to your city or town.

I'm filling in for Todd Gutner this week (who is on a well-deserved vacation), so I'll see you again tomorrow morning!
