$5,000 Reward Offered After Boston Police Uniforms Stolen From Weymouth Supply Store

WEYMOUTH (CBS) – A $5,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest of the person who stole Boston Police uniforms from a Weymouth supply store.

The uniforms were taken from Andrea's Police and Fire Supply sometime between March 27 at 3:30 p.m. and March 28 at 9:30 a.m.

Weymouth Police released photos of the Boston Police uniforms that were stolen. They include a lightweight jacket with Boston Police stamped on the back, a short sleeve shirt similar to what Boston's bike officers wear, uniform pants, a leather jacket and a dress coat both with Boston Police patches on the sleeve. The thieves also took a bullet resistant vest.

Tom Nolan, a former Boston Police lieutenant and professor at Emmanuel College says this is a cause for concern. Nolan says it is not uncommon for people to impersonate police officers. In 1990, thieves dressed as police officers and stole millions of dollars in art from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. It was one of the biggest heists in history.

Now with the marathon on Monday, officers have been told to be on high alert. Nolan says it would be difficult but not impossible for people wearing Boston Police uniforms to infiltrate the ranks at the marathon. Sources tell WBZ-TV's I-Team because of the concern about the stolen uniforms, Boston Police have put in special security protocols for the marathon.

The I-Team went to Andrea's to talk to the owner about the thefts, but no one would answer our questions. Sources say the thieves cut through drywall to steal the uniforms.

The FBI is helping Weymouth Police with the investigation.
