Police investigate apparent homicide of woman in Weymouth

WEYMOUTH - Police are investigating an apparent homicide in Weymouth.

The Norfolk County District Attorney's Office said 56-year-old Christine Ruth Mello was found dead in her Lake Street home Monday. Police said they believe Mello had been dead for several days before being found.

"Ms. Mello had recently been reported as missing," District Attorney Michael Morrissey said. "We are investigating this as an apparent homicide. Weymouth detectives and State Police assigned to the Norfolk District Attorney's Office have also been assisted by Crime Scene Services and other specialized sections of the State Police."

Neighbors call Mello's death "unsettling"

Although police said there was no danger to the public, many neighbors were unsettled by the news.

"Just a sad situation, and, as I say, you don't think it's going to happen right next door to you until it does happen," said neighbor Martin Ward.

The police presence was unsettling enough for the Lake Street community.

But Anthony Arredondo's heart sank when investigators knocked on his door, saying his beloved neighbor was found dead inside her own home from an apparent homicide.

Arredondo last saw the 56-year-old in late February.

"You see it in movies, and in shows, but you never think you're going to see next to your house. So pretty intense stuff," said Arredondo. "She's always super friendly, always caring about other people checking up on us so pretty sad."

Neighbors recall Mello as a friendly woman who often walked in the neighborhood and always had a wave for her neighbors.

Morrissey did not say how Mello died.

"It is a little unsettling not knowing a lot of the details of what happened and just hearing how long she was there. It's sad for the family and everything," said neighbor Bob Murphy.
