Safe And Jewelry Stolen From Marblehead Home Found Along Wenham Road

WENHAM (CBS) – A safe stolen during a Marblehead home break-in was found on the side of a Wenham road, along with more than $100,000 in jewelry.

A Wenham police officer noticed debris along the side of a road in town on Tuesday.

"At first we thought it was a microwave, we get a lot of appliances dumped in the woods," Wenham police detective Shane Kavanagh said.

At second glance, it was something far more valuable. It was a busted open safe and six pieces of jewelry and diamonds were strewn amid the leaves.  The items were collectively valued at over $100,000.

Police collected the items and after researching recent break-ins throughout the area discovered that a safe had been reported stolen from a Marblehead home in March.

On Wednesday, police determined the safe found in Wenham was the one that had been stolen from the Marblehead home.

"We're pleased to have recovered these items to return to their rightful owner," Wenham Police Chief Thomas Perkins said. "I commend the work of the detectives from the Wenham Police Department and Marblehead Police Department, who will continue to collaborate throughout this investigation."

Police say the theft seems to be an isolated incident, but the investigation is ongoing.
