Man Drowns In Wellesley Pond After Canoe Overturns

WELLESLEY (CBS) – The body of a man whose canoe overturned on a Wellesley pond has been found.

Divers searched Morses Pond after a man went out on a canoe not far off shore and flipped over around 1 p.m.

The man was a landscaper who was working on a house in the area when he took the canoe onto the pond during a break from work. The 35-year-old man was not wearing a life jacket.

Skip Willauer, a resident who lives nearby, says his son called him and was shaken by the news.

"Our youngest called us and was basically having a panic attack," Willauer said. "Our neighborhood has been inundated with police."

Dive teams from Wellesley, Natick and Cambridge searched for the man until they found him about three hours later about 40 to 50 feet offshore.

Wellesley Police say search and rescue efforts were hampered by heavy milfoil and weed infestation in that area of the pond.

No further details are currently available.
