Webster Five Bank Customers' Cards Compromised By Skimming Device

WEBSTER (CBS) -- Webster Five Bank said Tuesday that several of their customers' debit cards were compromised after skimming devices were placed on ATMs at their locations in Dudley and Webster.

The bank said their fraud monitoring system told them about the compromised cards on Sunday, after suspicious activity was noticed over the weekend in Boston and New York City.

According to a statement on the bank's website, the devices were placed on the ATMs after business hours, and removed before the banks opened the next day. They said that information was used to make copies of the customers' cards, and that those copies were used to withdraw money at ATMs in New York and Boston.

Webster Five said they have been reimbursing money and reissuing cards to their customers--but said anyone who used the ATMs during the time the devices were present is effected by the compromise.

The bank apologized for the inconvenience, and said they would like anyone who notices suspicious activity on their accounts to contact them immediately.
