Watertown Diners React To Comey's Testimony

WATERTOWN (CBS) - Diners ate their meal at a Watertown restaurant and said they were watching former FBI Director James Comey get grilled.

Joan Merritt Kraus said, "It's a sad time for us right now."

Another diner, Jim Kraus, says the situation reminds him of another dark time in the country's past.

"The situation reminds me of Watergate sadly, took 18 months for anything to happen in Watergate. Everybody was anticipating big news today, gonna have to wait a while to dig a little deeper," Kraus said.

During his testimony, the former FBI Director accused the president of misleading the public about why he was fired.

Jim Kraus' wife Joan was surprised at how Comey learned he had been fired.

"The thing that strikes me is that he found out that he was fired on television. It wasn't direct communication. That flipped me out," she said.

Comey said he kept detailed notes on his meetings with Trump because he worried the Commander-In-Chief might lie.

Bill Wheaton also watched the hearing and he said, based on Trump's past, he's not surprised by the situation.

"I mean it kind of stands to reason when you look at the president's track record, not just in office but someone we've seen rise over the decades its fairly unscrupulous. I feel like it would be irresponsible not to chronicle everything," Wheaton said.

Comey even admitted leaking his notes to the press.

Denise Oberdan says leaking to journalists upholds the people's right to know.

"By leaking to journalists, it allows the public to make decisions about what government should be and hopefully turns us into better citizens," Oldham said.

Another diner said this hearing was important because America isn't beyond investigating its people who are in the highest offices of power.
