Watch Giancarlo Stanton's Record Home Run Derby Performance
By Matt Dolloff, CBS Boston
BOSTON (CBS) -- Miami Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton may not have made the All-Star team this year, but his presence in the Home Run Derby was still a must-have. He showed why Monday night as he not only won the whole thing but set a Derby record with an absurd 61 total home runs, the same number that stood for decades as Roger Maris' single-season record.
Stanton launched 24 bombs in the first round, 17 in the second, and 20 in the finals. His longest homers were two marked at 497 feet and he averaged 447 feet per blast. The videos below show some of Stanton's most majestic shots.

Baltimore Orioles barbarian Mark Trumbo also put on a show for viewers with his incredible run at the end of his first round, surging past Dodgers shortstop Corey Seager in the closing seconds with about 6,000 home runs in a row. He also hit the giant scoreboard at PETCO Park in the second round.
The quality of the Derby was improved tremendously with last year's change to a timed format as opposed to limited swings for hitters. It results in an absolute barrage of bombs that Chris Berman, the cameramen, and producers in the TV truck can't even keep up with as they continually fly out of the ballpark. It also brought some hilarious Twitter reactions.
In the home run derby, you're not allowed to throw a pitch until the previous ball lands..Same rule applied to me the last 4 years I pitched
