Teen Seriously Injured In Crash Following Police Pursuit

WAREHAM (CBS) – A 17-year-old is in serious condition after crashing while trying to evade police in Wareham.

A driver on Glen Charlie Road in East Wareham reported being sideswiped by a passing vehicle Saturday morning around 4:20 a.m.

The driver whose car was hit remained behind the erratic driver and reported locations to Wareham Police.

An officer eventually spotted the suspect as he drove through a plaza with no lights on at a high rate of speed.

Police then lost sight of the vehicle, but other officers found it about a mile later on County Road.

Wareham Police learned the driver was a 17-year-old man with a suspended license.

Because of the high rate of speed, police say they terminated their pursuit of the vehicle. Seconds later,  officers found the car crashed on County Road.

The car was heavily damaged after skidding off the road and hitting several trees.

Officers found the 17-year-old driver, whose identity was not released, lying in the roadway.

He was transported to Rhode Island Hospital in serious condition.

No one else was injured during the pursuit and crash.
