Walsh On Decision To Cancel School: 'I'd Rather Be Safe Than Sorry'

BOSTON (CBS) --- New Mayor Marty Walsh is not second guessing his decision to close Boston schools.

On Tuesday afternoon, Walsh closed Boston Public Schools ahead of the snow storm, his first no school call as mayor.

Wednesday morning, Boston measured 5.2 inches of snow with areas north and west of the city measuring even less. The South Shore and Cape were hardest hit by the storm.

WBZ-TV's David Wade asked Walsh if he wished he had a mulligan on canceling school.

"I'd rather be safe, than sorry," Walsh said. "Keeping school buses off the streets will allow people to get to work today."

Walsh said the city is now preparing for extreme cold, expected to linger for the next several days.

"Last night we had about 100 phone calls to EMS, one hypothermia call," Walsh said. "Overall, it was a great response by the city and a pretty good night for the city."

Walsh said the city's parking ban would be lifted at 8 a.m.
