Massachusetts One Of The Least Charitable States, Study Says

BOSTON (CBS) -- 'Tis the season of giving--but a study conducted by financial website Wallet Hub showed Massachusetts to be giving less than most other states.

The study, 2015's Most and Least Charitable States, showed the Bay State ranked 40th of the 50 states in terms of charitableness. While the state ranked fourth in highest number of charities per capita, it ranked 46th in percent of donated income among residents.

The study's methodology considered both the giving of time and money, with the rate at which each state's residents volunteered factoring into the scores. The percentage of the population who donated time and money, as well as the median contributions made to charities, also factored in.

Utah was ranked the most charitable state, while Rhode Island was ranked the least.
