3 Hospitalized After Cleaning Solution Triggers Hazmat Response In Wakefield

WAKEFIELD (CBS) – Three people were taken to the hospital when a cleaning solution triggered a hazmat response at a warehouse in Wakefield on Monday.

Several dozen employees were evacuated from the Produce Connection facility on Audubon Road.

One woman was wheeled away on a stretcher.

Employees complained about an odor coming from the machine used to clean organic fruits and vegetables. Because more than one person felt sick, firefighters evacuated the building as a precaution.

The hazmat team investigated for about three hours, but found no evidence of anything hazardous inside of the Produce Connection facility.

One half of the building is back in business, while the other half needs to be cleared by the Board of Health before reopening. Fire officials say they're still investigating what happened inside.
