Veterans' Graves Vandalized In West Bridgewater

WEST BRIDGEWATER (CBS) - Veterans' gravestones were toppled and urns were smashed at a local cemetery just ahead of Veterans Day.

"It's kind of a mix between sadness and anger," said Lauren Delaney, who sits on the board of the Old Pleasant Hill Cemetery in West Bridgewater.

"This is part of people's history, people that come to remember, people that come to honor the veterans."

She says this is unacceptable.

"Every time we've been hit in here it's been right before a holiday - Veterans Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July and Labor Day."

Over the weekend, vandals damaged or destroyed several gravestones many of which belong to veterans.

"They knocked the stone completely over," said Jane Borus. "I still get upset when I think about them and to have someone do this to them."

Jane's grandparents died in the 1960s. Her father died three years ago.

"I used to go often," she says. "I have a tough time going now."

Her grandfather and dad both served their country.

"It's just terrible. I don't understand. I think they have entirely too much time on their hands. They have no respect whatsoever. They just don't."

Delaney says she'll consider removing the flags if it will remove the target. Police believe the vandals are likely kids.

Jane says that shouldn't matter.

"They have to be held accountable for what they did," Jane says. If they're going to do this, I don't know what they'll do later on."
