Vandals Target Disabled Veteran In Derry, NH

BOSTON (CBS) - A disabled veteran says he's been targeted by vandals in the days leading up to Veterans Day.

Last week, Barry Laughton says someone smeared dog feces all over his van. The next day, it was decorated with bright orange spray paint. When he brought the van in for repairs, someone spray painted his replacement rental, and tried to pour sugar in the gas tank.

"I'm appalled. I just can't believe somebody would do this and target people," says his wife, Nancy Laughton. After living in the same apartment for seven years, the couple only recently secured the assigned spot in the far corner of their complex's handicap parking section. They're both disabled, and drive for a service that provides transportation for disabled children.

They can't imagine what the motive is, but hope it has nothing to do with the fact that Barry Laughton is a Vietnam veteran. "The troops coming back, no respect," he said.

Derry Police have promised to step up patrols within the apartment complex.

The couple has also set up a GOFUNDME page, to help pay for the repairs.
