Framingham Teen Arrested For Assault That Prompted UMass Lockdown

AMHERST (CBS) – One of two suspects accused of a campus assault that forced a lockdown at the University of Massachusetts Amherst has been arrested.

UMass Police Chief Tyrone Parham said Friday morning a warrant had been issued for the arrest of a person who is not a student.

Just before noon William McKeown, 19, of Framingham had turned himself in to police.

No warrant has been issued for the second suspect, though Parham said the investigation is ongoing.

Police say a student was assaulted by McKeown and another person in Pierpont Hall, a dorm for first year students, at about 5:15 p.m. on Thursday. The two suspects fled campus after the incident.

Students received shelter in place orders after the assault as police searched for a "hostile armed person."

A gun was shown but not fired during the incident.

The victim suffered a cut on his forehead. He was hospitalized but released and interviewed by police.

Parham said police looked at video evidence from Pierpont Hall, which is locked 24 hours a day and requires a resident ID for entry. Footage shows the two suspects being let into the dorm by a resident.

Police say the McKeown will be charged with armed robbery, assault and battery, and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.
