Tow Truck Driver Struck, Critically Injured On I-495

MIDDLEBORO (CBS) -- A tow truck driver suffered life-threatening injuries after he was struck while helping another driver on Interstate 495 North in Middleboro early Sunday morning.

Massachusetts State Police said the tow truck driver was assisting a disabled motorist just north of Exit 4 when another driver struck both the disabled vehicle and the tow truck driver at about 12:39 a.m.

He was responding to a AAA call, trying to hook up a disabled SUV on his rig when suddenly he was hit by a 2008 Honda Civic.

"It does appear that speed was a factor, but the investigation is ongoing," Trooper Matthew Guarino told WBZ NewsRadio 1030.

The tow truck driver, 33-year-old Jonathan Tetreault of Wareham, was MedFlighted to a Rhode Island hospital with life-threatening injuries.

A 29-year-old Dorchester driver and 32-year-old passenger in the car that struck Tetreault were also hospitalized, but their conditions were not immediately known.

Tetreault works for Marc's Auto Service in Wareham.

His boss, Marc Whitney, says he is in bad shape.

"He's in the trauma unit. He's in serious condition," he told WBZ-TV's Jim Smith. "Everybody's praying for him right now."

The tow truck and SUV are at the Middleboro State Police Barracks while police continue to investigate the accident.
