Tony Mazz Scouts Yoan Moncada Ahead Of Call-Up To Red Sox

BOSTON (CBS) -- Yoan Moncada is up with the Boston Red Sox, and he's ready to make his MLB debut this weekend in Oakland.

While Red Sox fans -- and the team -- are excited to see what the 21-year-old can do at the big league level, Tony Massarotti was able to catch a sneak preview last weekend in Portland.

Mazz can't quite give a 100 percent accurate prediction on how Moncada will handle the jump from Double-A to the big leagues, but he did offer a brief scouting report on the No. 1 prospect in all of baseball.

"Moncada showed the kind of bat speed that everyone has said he has from the left side," Mazz said. "He's batted over .300 against right-handed pitching this year, and his OPS is almost 1.000."

Massarotti noted that Moncada "is not nearly the same player from the right side of the plate," owning just a .167 average as a right-handed batter.

As for defense, Mazz was impressed with Moncada's athleticism in the field.

"At least based on what I saw over the weekend, he's got unbelievable range to his left," Mazz said. "He made a play diving to his left that I would venture to guess 90 percent of the third basemen in Major League Baseball would not get to. He got to it, got up, made the throw to first, got the guy out."

Check out the video above for the full scouting report, and tune in to the Felger & Massarotti show, weekdays 2-6 p.m. on 98.5 The Sports Hub.
