Drivers Say Toll Construction To Make For 'Terrible' Monday Commute

BOSTON (CBS) -- All Electronic Tolling is in effect across Massachusetts, but MassDOT says Monday is the real test, calling the morning commute its Superbowl.

As the commute draws near, though, drivers say they aren't too confident in the state's playbook.

"I absolutely think it will be crazy," one driver said. "I think people hear these things, but it goes in one ear and out the other."

"It's going to be hectic at first," another driver said. "There's no way around that.

Despite driver worries, the state has a plan in place. MassDOT administrator Tom Tinlin said drivers should follow directions for an easier commute.

"There's going to be a lot of activity, there's less road for people to use to travel than they're used to," Tinlin said. "We're reminding people to obey the 15 mile per hour limit through these old toll areas, which are now construction areas, stay in your lane, and do not stop at these old legacy toll plazas. There's nobody there to take your money. So, it's really about planning and being smart."

Drivers are also encouraged to leave for work a little earlier or later than usual, use public transportation and take advantage of traffic apps on smart phones.

"Everybody's zooming past me so I hope I get here before them," one commuter said. "So, I'll have to leave early Monday morning."

As one commuter added, patience is key during Monday's commute. The drive, she said, will be almost like a snow day.
